2020 Chardonnay, Margaret River   $40.00

The inspiration for this wine is easy. Chardonnay loves Margaret River, and Margaret River loves Chardonnay. Our love for local Chardonnay is unconditional, and with love comes great respect. Respect for Margaret River as one of the best locations to grow Chardonnay in Australia. Respect for the individual traits of the differing Chardonnay clones grown in the region, and the subtle variance of terroir. Respect for the critical role of winemaking in shaping great fruit into brilliant Chardonnay.

Our previous Chardonnays have often been a blend of vineyards, clones and even different sub regions of Margaret River. This vintage, we chose to produce our first single vineyard Chardonnay to specifically showcase the subregion of Yallingup, and the Gingin clone.

The 2020 Chardonnay is a contemporary Margaret River Chardonnay with a classical edge.

2020 was an unusual vintage for Margaret River. Harvest started almost a month earlier than usual, yields were significantly lower, ripening conditions were near on perfect, the marri trees blossomed, and the last half of vintage was conducted in COVID-19 lockdown! Although 2020 was a challenging year around the globe, in Margaret River we have been fortunate with exceptional fruit quality – albeit with lower yields. The lower yields were due to the smaller berries and bunch sets (a factor from the 2018 conditions on the preparation of the fruitful nodes), as well as some wet weather impact during flowering and fruit set. Although production volumes were down due, the small berries have provided exceptional fruit due to the concentration.

Apart from rain during flowering, the rest of the ripening conditions were ideal with warmer than average conditions and no rainfall, bird, or disease pressure. The fruit for this vintage was sourced from a grower in the Yallingup subregion and was hand harvested in the early hours of the morning in the first week of February – much earlier than the usual harvest for this vineyard.

Gingin clone normally presents with small bunches, however 2020 fruit presented with even smaller bunches and a significantly higher percentages of chicken versus hen berries which kept the acid levels up and allowed flavours to develop further on the vine. Although great for quality and flavour development (resulting in exceptional fruit), the smaller berries and bunches reduced our anticipated yield by as much as 40%, making it a bittersweet vintage for Margaret River Chardonnay.

The hand harvested fruit was refrigerated for 24 hours and allowed to cool down before being whole bunch pressed direct to an even mix of new, one year old, two year old and three year old French oak barriques and puncheons where it remained on solids for 10 months prior to bottling. Regular stirring of the lees through fermentation was conducted but not carried on after fermentation, and malolactic formation was cut off early based on taste.

In a glass the wine presents with a vibrant straw tinged yellow.

Lifted intense varietal characteristics of stone fruit with a hint of lemon, and complimented by nutty characters.

The palate expresses a flinty liveliness of stone fruit, with well-balanced natural acidity and complexity.
