2019 Sangiovese, Margaret River   $35.00

Our love for Italian varietals and vintage spent making Chianti in Tuscany, Italy was the main inspiration to make a Sangiovese in 2019. With this wine we wanted to showcase a fruit forward wine with natural acidity and food focus.

Our 2019 Sangiovese was harvested under this years Supermoon, when the Moon comes the closest to the Earth in its elliptic orbit, hence it’s nickname the “Supermoon Sangiovese”.

Again, the challenge to test the norm for expected varietals grown within the Margaret River region inspired us to make the 2019 Sangiovese – that combined of course with our love for Italian varietals and wine and our time spent amongst the vines in Tuscany, Italy. With this wine we wanted to showcase a fruit forward wine with natural acidity and food focus. This is a rare Margaret River expression of this variety and made in tiny amounts, this is the perfect fresh, juicy wine to go with friends and food.

2019 was a slightly unusual vintage for Margaret River, with cooler than usual temperatures throughout Spring and Summer coupled with less than normal sun exposure. This made for an important focus on canopy management, with continual leaf plucking and thinning throughout the vintage imperative to ensure that there was ample sun exposure and ventilation. This was particularly important to ensure that disease was minimised following unexpected humidity throughout the season. Despite yields being down across the board, the somewhat restrained weather pattern made for elegant flavours across the board with the reds. The grapes for our Sangiovese are sourced the warmer and drier areas of the northern Margaret River sub-region Wilyabrup (Carpe Diem Vineyards) where the vines consistently achieve ripe, flavoursome and high quality fruit.

The grapes were destemmed and crushed into small open fermenters where they were fermented on skins, including 20% whole bunch, before pressing into a mixture of new Hungarian and older French oak barrels. The wine was then matured on oak for a period of six months before being bottled. The decision to use Hungarian oak was influenced from our time spent in Italy, where this was the preferred oak when working with Chiantis, where the tighter grain tends to bring out a leaner, spicier element of the flavour profile of the oak.

In a glass the wine presents with vibrant crimson red colours.

Youthful and aromatic with spicy cherry aromas.

Our 2019 Sangiovese is a superb fruit-driven mouth-feel wine, balanced by beautiful tannins you would expect from the Italian varietal and tangy acid. A hint of clove, cherry and spicy plum reaches the mid palate.

We aim for minimal intervention to let the fruit express itself, yet there are certain things we do need to maintain the quality and integrity of this wine. We’ve added minimal sulphites to stabilise the wine and ensure its shelf life. It has also been course filtered.
